The boundaries of the Negombo Lagoon to the South, the Kelani river to the east, Jaela and Mahara divisional secretarial boundaries and the Indian ocean from the west,are 56.6 sq.Km.With a terrain the highest point of this section is not more than 100 feet above sea level.Costal features of the coastline and marshy lands spread along coastal lowlands.
Muthuraja wela belonngs important.According to the legends,Muthurajah during the reign of King Kelanitissa had been successful in paddy cultivation and it was said that he was named Muthurajawela in commemoration of this area.
Another legend states that this name was used because muthu samba were cultivated in the area.At present, this area has fallen off due to salt water
